'Poetry belongs to the core of human heart and mind. All other arts can only aspire to the condition of poetry.'

This eponymous film depicts the life and poetry of Narayan Gangaram Surve who is recognized as an outstanding poet of Marathi, through landmark events and a number of his outstanding poems. Opening on his being abandoned by his mother at the gate of a mill, the film follows the baby as Gangaram Surve takes him home. Surve's childhood as a child worker in a mill and canteens, his youth in the working class movement, his inspiration for his first song, his elopement and marriage, and his rise from a peon in a municipal school to a teacher are all flawlessly blended with his poetry by deft and innovative narrative. Kishore Kadam plays the poet brilliantly and his enactment of Surve teaching one of his own poems Maajhi Aai ( My Mother ) is a highlight of the film.
