The Director :

A gold medallist from the FTII, Pune, Girish Kasaravalli emerged on the national and international film scene in 1977 with his film " Ghatashradha ". He won the Golden Lotus for it, along with many other international awards. During the centenary celebrations of cinema, Ghatashradha was the only Indian film to feature in list when the National Film Archive of Paris made a world selection of 100 films.

Over the years, Girish Kasaravalli has made eight other feature films, all of which have won awards at both national and international levels. He won the Golden Lotus again for his Tabarana Kathe in 1987, Thayi Saheba in 1998 and for his latest film Dweepa in 2002. ' Mane ' was his first film made in both Kannada and Hindi.

Notes on the Film :

Environmental sound is an integral character in 'Mane'. Imaginative use is made of every conceivable sound preventing a newly married couple to settle down in life. Sound plays the metaphorical villain in the film! The mixing and blending of various sounds in the soundtrack of the film offers an insight into the hybridization and mechanization of life in a small town in India , taking the film beyond the four walls of the house.

The director felt that he could have cast Kannada actors instead of Naseer and Deepti. But the inherent strength of these performers surpasses the minor language hurdle making the film a modern classic.

Synopsis:

Naseerudin Shah and Deepti Naval play their hearts out as a young couple who have finally found their own house, but are then driven crazy by the neighbors. One of Girish Kasaravalli's finest works, he shows his talent to create suspense and build a plot around a mysterious and abstract obstacle. Rajanna (Naseerudin Shah) and Geeta (Deepti Naval) are a just married couple, bursting with desire to start living together. They set up their home in a crowded street in the big city. Soon, however, the smooth flow of their lives is disrupted as they try to get rid of the intolerable noise created by a neighboring workshop. It's an embarrassing and compromising struggle, especially for Geeta who has to deal with a wily police officer. Two brilliant actors, Naseeruddin Shah and Deepti Naval give one of their best performances in this intimate film.
